About the Frederick Symphony Orchestra's Young Artist Competition

Designed to encourage the best young musicians in Maryland, the competition rotates on a three-year cycle in the following sequence: Piano in 2011, Strings in 2012, Winds and Brass in 2013.

Congratulations to clarinetist Griffin Yourick, the Grand-Prize Winner of the Frederick Symphony Orchestra’s 2010 Young Artist Competition for Winds and Brass!

Griffin Yourick is the son of George and Lynne Yourick. He graduated as a senior honors and AP student from Frederick High School in Frederick, MD, where he was a member of the jazz ensemble under the direction of Mr. Kevin Lewis.

Under the baton of Mr. Elijah Wirth, he participated in the Frederick Regional Youth Orchestra (FRYO) for five years and was its principal clarinetist for four years. He was the 2007 winner of FRYO’s concerto competition.

Griffin began playing clarinet in his elementary school’s band program in the fourth grade and studied privately with Mrs. Julie Robinson for three years. He completed five years in the Preparatory Music Division of Hood College under the instruction of Mr. David Duree. He has participated in All-County Middle and High School Band, All-State Junior and Senior Band, county and state solo and ensemble festivals, and McDaniel Summer Music Camp. He values the support his parents have given him. Starting in the Fall of 2010, he is a student at UMBC, majoring in physics.
